The Beginner Mandarin Chinese series is our core curriculum.  We start by providing our students with a solid foundation in pronunciation and tones, before building strength in verbal communication through vocabulary, dialogues and sentence structures.

Our curriculum places a strong emphasis is on verbal communication - listening and speaking.  We want our students to be able to apply what they learn in class to real life situations.  Students initially learn from the textbook, but use the majority of time in class speaking and being corrected by their instructor.

Beginner Level 1 (B1) Mandarin Chinese

This course is designed for complete beginners.  If you have never studied Mandarin Chinese before this is the class for you.  The first part of the curriculum focuses on tone, pronunciation, and pinyin (Chinese pronunciation represented by English letters), giving students a solid grounding in the basics needed for speaking Mandarin Chinese with confidence and accuracy.  Students will begin learning practical vocabulary, such as greetings, pronouns, etc.

• Simple sentence structures
• Greetings
• Pronouns
• Positive and negative sentences
• Question words

Beginner Level 2 (B2) Mandarin Chinese

Students registering for this course must have a solid foundation in tones and pronunciation, as well as a working knowledge of basic vocabulary (i.e. greetings, simple sentences).  Beginner Level 2 Mandarin Chinese builds on skills learned in level one.

• Measures and numbers
• Introductions (introducing yourself and asking someones name)
• Asking and giving price
• Complex and approximate numbers
• Auxiliary verbs

Beginner Level 3 (B3) Mandarin Chinese

Students registering for this course should be familiar with numbers, introductions and titles, use of measures and basic sentence structures.  This course focused on more complex sentence patterns and parts of speech.

Topics include:

• Descriptions Describing somebody or something
• Complex sentence structures nouns modified by nouns & pronouns, nouns modified by English adjectives, nouns modified by clauses
• Chinese prepositions (co-verbs)
• Locations and Motion
• Chinese past aspect (English past tense)
