Strategies for Canadian SMEs & Entrepreneurs in China (Half-Day Workshops)
Back Print Page Email Page

Many Canadian SMEs look to China and wonder how, or if, they could do business there. The opportunities are enormous. But the risks can be daunting… exacerbated by the vast gap in cultural intelligence between you and your Chinese counterparts.

You may know about companies that have been negligent about cultural awareness.  They are still wondering why their efforts in China have been frustrating and inexplicably delayed – or perhaps have failed outright.

Beyond the obvious language barrier, there are vast differences in how we communicate nonverbally and process information. For instance, sharing a meal in China can be a lot more important than “client entertainment.”  Gift giving comes with protocol.  Your own personal image is under a subtle microscope. Introductions are a formal affair and convey hierarchy. Success in China depends on positive relationships – but how do you develop those without an understanding of the culture? The list goes on.

This half-day, fully interactive workshop will give you insight and practical strategies into differences/challenges of business communication and negotiations in China, and your business an advantage in understanding a very foreign business environment.

The Small Business in China Workshop content includes:

  • Illustration of concepts unique to business in China such as preserving face, guanxi, indirect speech and other issues.
  • Developing awareness of Western vs Chinese assumptions and values, as well as common stereotypes and perceptions that Chinese nationals have of Canadians (and vice versa), and how they impact business.
  • Analysis of Chinese character traits, core country values, behaviors, attitudes and ways of viewing the world.
  • Extending respect and avoiding offense and other elements of Chinese business etiquette.
  • How to develop positive “guanxi,” and why this is critical.
  • How to negotiate, provide leadership, represent your company.
  • Checklist for choosing suppliers and tactics for maintaining good relationships.
