All of our instructors are experienced teachers from several provinces of Mainland China.  All speak standard Putonghua and all have been trained in TLI's unique teaching methodology.

In the classroom, students can expect an immersive environment - where Mandarin is used as much as possible, even in giving very simple instructions in the beginner level course.  The goal is to give class participants as much opportunity to speak and receive feedback as possible.

TLI Teaching Methods

TLI has been refining its distinctive “TLI Teaching Methodology” since its establishment 50 years ago.  These methods have not only been practiced by TLI for years, but have also been popularly adopted in United States, Canada, Britain, Japan, India, Malaysia and Hong Kong. Since the 1960’s Yale University has been practicing TLI teaching method through their Chinese Language program.

Our Direct Teaching Method

  • Classes are conducted entirely in Chinese, unless the explanation of abstract ideas requires the use of English.
  • Books are closed in class most of the time; the focus is on getting the sounds and meaning directly from the instructor's lips and gestures. The text is an aid; it represents the material to be mastered, but is not itself the object of the study.
  • The objective of the course is to teach students to express themselves in whole sentences.  Words as isolated items are of no great value.  They become important only in relation to other words in the stream of speech.
  • Emphasis is on using language in meaningful, real-life situations necessary for successful communication rather than emphasizing mastery of structure or system.
  • Attention is given to the learning strategies, problems and needs of the learner.
  • We focus upon a student-centered, student-controlled situation.  The student is more personally involved and assumes more responsibility in problem solving – which results in more thorough and more rapid acquisition.
  • Well-structured and progressive courses provide proper materials for all levels of students.
