For Chinese Executives
Back Print Page Email Page

New employees from greater China, whether graduate students entering the market for the first time, or seasoned executives bring remarkable skills and knowledge to North American companies.

Yet often their skills and knowledge are not enough for them to be successful in the Canadian workplace.  Major intercultural value gaps lead to frustration and can be unknown obstacles to being successful at work.

North American employers have specific but “unwritten” expectations of how their employees should act in the workplace.  Often they are not aware of these unstated rules – they are only aware when a new employee does not follow them.  When new Chinese employees don’t understand these expectations, or how to meet them, it can lead to frustration for the employer and lack of promotion, or worse, for the employee.

Customized training is delivered upon request to colleges, universities and companies.  Please contact Carla Kearns, carla@themandarinschool.com or 416-581-8868 for more information.

A typical 2-day workshop provides the essential preparation and training that will allow you to be comfortable, successful and valuable in your Canadian workplace.  Training addresses the specific challenges that Chinese employees encounter in Canadian companies, and gives practical skills to overcome them.

•    What are the “dealbreakers” that cause an employer to lose confidence in you, regardless of your experience, knowledge and skills?
•    What actions or behaviours could offend and alienate co-workers?
•    What are the actions that you must cultivate in order to become invaluable to your company?
•    How do fundamental differences in Chinese and Western values about time, individualism, and rules create frustrations in the workplace, and how can you avoid these?
•    How do you ask the right questions in the right way at the right time to make sure you do your job well?
•    How can you establish the essential social connections within the workplace.
•    How to behave appropriately at social events.
•    How, why and when can you take the initiative?

The workshop is conducted by Carla Kearns (柯颖丽) Managing Director of TLI-the Mandarin School. Ms. Kearns has conducted intercultural training and seminars for some of Canada’s best known companies, including TD Financial, AGF Management, Brock University, Hoffman-La Roche, Pall Life Sciences, Enterprise Toronto, ConAgra Foods and Prudential Life Sciences.  Carla has worked in Shanghai and Taiwan and manages an all-Chinese staff.

Workshops are conducted in English.  Price includes lunch, course materials and a valuable book of scripts to use at work.
