China is a politically, economically and culturally vital country experiencing a remarkable transformation. However, as China continues to expand its economic wealth, it is reaping devastating consequences on its environment, resources and quality of life. Furthermore, China’s population and expanding integration into the world economy will ensure that its impact on the global environment will be significant.
While debate rages over how Canada should (re)act toward China’s rise, there is one area where we are poised to make a significant and positive impact: the environmental sector. Co-operation in the environmental protection industry provides Canada various opportunities to not only participate proactively in China’s growing economy, but also to deepen and strengthen the Canada-China relationship in this renewal period.
Canada has the technology and resource potential to build its leadership in the Chinese environmental protection industry through research, development and commercialization of clean energy and cleantech. What's needed is the long-term vision, political and industry will and a multi-disciplined strategy to fulfill this vision.
This report outlines the recommendations from the 2008 Canada China Environmental Forum. |
